I’m Betting on Me
When the play is unclear, but the purpose is calling
A quick note about the title:
I cannot say that A’ja Wilson was the first person ever to utter the words, “I’m betting on me.” But it was hearing her say them, within the context of her story, that caused the phrase to settle somewhere deeper than my ears.
It took root in my spirit.
I heard more than the confidence of an extraordinary athlete. I heard the voice of someone standing inside an uncertain moment, without a perfectly drawn play or a guarantee of how it would end, choosing to trust what had already been cultivated within her.
That is how I’m Betting on Me came to live in me.
And perhaps, by the end of this reflection, it will live a little differently in you too.
When the Board Goes Blank
The final moments of an important basketball game were unfolding.
The score was close. The pressure was high. The moment called for a plan.
A’ja Wilson described her coach drawing what appeared to be a line on the board, then erasing it.
That was it.
No elaborate diagram.
No perfectly mapped path.
No detailed explanation of exactly how everything was supposed to unfold.
A’ja was confused.
What was the play?
Where was she supposed to go?
What, exactly, was she supposed to do?
Her teammates reminded her of who she was. They affirmed her skill, her preparation, and the greatness they already saw in her.
You are the MVP.
You are one of the best.
You have this.
But what stayed with me was A’ja’s honesty.
She did not pretend she felt completely sure.
She did not describe herself as fearless, fully confident, or entirely clear about how the moment would unfold.
She knew the players guarding her had different strengths. She knew the opening might be small. She knew the shot might not be easy.
Still, she came back to one simple truth:
If she could see the rim, she was betting on herself.
The Plan Is Not Always Clear
How many times have we found ourselves standing in front of a blank board?
We thought the plan would be clearer by now.
We expected the path to be mapped out.
We assumed that if something was meant for us, the instructions would arrive neatly, completely, and right on time.
Instead, we receive a nudge.
A single line.
A persistent idea.
An opportunity that feels both exciting and terrifying.
Then the board appears to go blank.
We wonder whether we missed something.
Did we misunderstand the guidance?
Did we move too quickly?
Did we take a wrong turn?
Are we truly prepared for what is being placed in our hands?
There are moments when we want the Divine to hand us a full blueprint, complete with labels, timelines, guarantees, and a brightly colored arrow that says:
Start here.
But sometimes the guidance does not come that way.
Sometimes the message is simply:
The ball is coming to you.
Betting on Yourself Is Not Blind Confidence
Betting on yourself does not mean believing you will never fail.
It does not mean pretending you know everything.
It does not mean forcing yourself to feel confident when you are scared, uncertain, tired, or overwhelmed.
Betting on yourself means trusting that you can meet the moment.
It means believing that you can use what you have learned.
It means remembering that your wisdom, preparation, instincts, and experience do not disappear simply because the path has become unclear.
A’ja did not step onto that court with only a motivational phrase.
She carried years of practice.
Years of discipline.
Years of repetition.
Years of learning how to read the court, respond under pressure, recover from mistakes, and trust her body.
Her self-belief was not empty.
It was rooted.
That is the difference between saying something because it sounds inspiring and believing something because you have lived your way into it.
I’m betting on me is not a claim of perfection.
It is a declaration of relationship.
I trust the person I have become.
I trust the lessons I have gathered.
I trust that I can respond, adjust, and keep moving.
I trust that when the opening appears, I will recognize it.
And when I can see the rim, I will take the shot.
The Divine May Trust You More Than You Realize
Perhaps the blank board is not abandonment.
Perhaps it is not evidence that there is no plan.
Perhaps it is an invitation.
We often interpret incomplete guidance as a sign that we are alone.
But what if the missing details are actually where our agency enters the play?
What if the Divine is not withholding the plan?
What if the Divine is saying:
You already carry what you need for this part.
Trust your preparation.
Trust the gifts placed within you.
Trust the wisdom formed through every previous season.
Trust yourself enough to move.
There is something deeply sacred about realizing that divine guidance does not always remove uncertainty.
Sometimes it accompanies us through it.
Sometimes it reminds us of who we are while we stand in the middle of it.
Sometimes it places the ball in our hands and asks us to remember what has already been cultivated within us.
You Do Not Have to See the Whole Court
Sometimes we delay our own movement because we are waiting to see everything.
We want to know what will happen next month, next year, or five years from now.
We want confirmation that the decision will work.
We want assurance that no one will misunderstand us, reject us, challenge us, or stand in our way.
We want to see the entire court.
But perhaps you do not need to see the entire court.
Perhaps you only need to see the rim.
The rim is the next clear truth.
The next honest step.
The next decision that aligns with who you are becoming.
The next opportunity to act from purpose rather than fear.
You may not know how the entire dream will unfold.
You may not know where every resource will come from.
You may not know who will support you, who will surprise you, or which obstacle will require you to change direction.
But can you see the next opening?
Can you recognize what is yours to do now?
Can you trust yourself enough to take that shot?
Self-Trust Is a Practice
We often speak about self-confidence as though it is something we either possess or lack.
But self-trust is built.
It is tended.
It grows every time you keep a promise to yourself.
Every time you listen to your intuition.
Every time you recover after disappointment.
Every time you admit that something is not working and choose a different path.
Every time you survive a moment that once made you question whether you could.
Betting on yourself does not begin in the final seconds of the game.
It begins in the quiet, ordinary moments no one else sees.
The mornings when you continue.
The evenings when you reassess.
The times when you rest instead of quitting.
The moments when you choose honesty over performance.
The seasons when progress seems slow, but roots are still forming beneath the surface.
When the high-pressure moment arrives, you are not suddenly becoming someone new.
You are drawing upon the person you have been cultivating all along.
Your Teammates Matter Too
A’ja’s teammates reminded her of who she was when she could not fully feel it for herself.
That matters.
Betting on yourself does not mean doing everything alone.
It does not mean refusing help, feedback, encouragement, or support.
Sometimes self-trust is strengthened through the eyes of people who have witnessed your preparation.
People who remind you:
You have done hard things before.
You know more than you think.
You are ready enough for the next step.
You may not feel powerful in this moment, but I have seen your power.
There will be times when your own voice feels quiet.
Let trustworthy people help you remember.
Not people who pressure you to perform.
Not people who dismiss your fear.
Not people who demand that you pretend everything is easy.
Choose people who can hold both truths:
This moment is hard.
And you are capable.
The Shot Still Requires Release
There comes a moment when preparation must become action.
You can study the court.
You can consider the risks.
You can gather information, make plans, seek guidance, pray, meditate, journal, and consult every trusted voice you know.
All of that can be wise.
But eventually, the ball has to leave your hands.
You have to submit the application.
Start the business.
Share the idea.
Make the call.
Set the boundary.
Enter the room.
Begin again.
Take the shot.
There is no guarantee that every attempt will land exactly as you hoped.
Betting on yourself is not a promise that every shot will score.
It is a promise that fear will not always be the one making your decisions.
It is the choice to participate fully in your own becoming.
I Am Betting on Me
Perhaps you are standing in a moment right now where the board feels blank.
You cannot clearly see the plan.
You are unsure how all the pieces will come together.
The dream feels larger than your current resources.
The calling feels clearer than the path.
You may be wondering whether you have what it takes to carry what is arriving.
Pause.
Breathe.
Remember what has already been cultivated within you.
Remember every lesson that shaped your discernment.
Remember every challenge that strengthened your ability to adapt.
Remember every time you thought you could not continue, and somehow found your next step.
You do not have to know everything.
You do not have to feel fearless.
You do not need a perfect path.
You need enough clarity to recognize the rim.
Enough trust to release the ball.
Enough belief to say:
I’m betting on me.
One More Thing
A’ja later joked that the shot did not fall with some perfect, cinematic swish.
It went something more like:
Bink. Bink. Bink.
And then it went in.
Life is so often like that.
We imagine our dreams unfolding in a clean, graceful line.
We picture the opportunity arriving at the perfect time.
The money appearing when we need it.
The plan working on the first try.
The right people understanding immediately.
The path opening without interruption.
We imagine the shot leaving our hands and dropping smoothly through the net.
Swish.
But real life often has a little more bink, bink, bink in it.
The unexpected expense.
The delay.
The rejection.
The revised plan.
The moment of doubt.
The reroute we did not ask for.
The pause that feels longer than it should.
Those moments may frustrate us.
They may sadden us.
They may temporarily deter us or leave us holding our breath, wondering whether the thing we hoped for is still going to land.
But the sound of the ball touching the rim is not the same as the sound of failure.
Sometimes it is simply the sound of the goal finding its way in.
Preparation matters.
Focus matters.
The desired outcome matters.
And the decision to keep betting on yourself matters.
The path may not look like the straight line you imagined should have been drawn for you.
The ball may circle the rim a few times.
Your breath may catch.
Time may seem to slow.
But do not look away too soon.
The shot is still in motion.
And sometimes, after every unexpected bounce, it still scores.
Bink. Bink. Bink.
Count it.
